Update June 4th, 2009:As an update to my external computer hard drive purchase, I bought the life preserver Lacie. Yeah, i know everyone and their mama wanted me to get the Lego, but I chose function over form this time. I want a drive that will last for the long run. It's been almost an entire month since putting my order and it finally came in the mail = p
I didn't want to follow up with it because frankly, I'm poor and didn't know if I was gonna make ends meet before I got more money. Well, more money has come, and the hard drive was just delivered by UPS just in time as I'm hoping to prepare our horror/thriller, Killigraphy for film festivals this year. I've already stuffed the hard drive with about 600 Gigabytes of files to make space on my desktop. It's crazy how films take so much space.

Original Post from May 12, 2009: This hard drive is butch! heck yeah!
I've been checking online as I need to invest in a new external hard drive as I ran out of space due to so many film projects. Since i just got a little extra money from last year's income tax refund, it's a great investment for the future. check out this baby:
The Lacie Rugged XL

It may look like a raft or a life-preserver, but this external harddrive can handle a beating yet keep on ticking. It's a Lacie drive with freakin' one whole terabite of space and it's only $159! On the downside, it only has a USB drive and no Firewire 400 or 800 drives and comes with a 2 year warranty.
On the other corner, is another hard drive from the Lacie family that i'm weighing against the 1 TB:
The Lacie D2 Quadra 1.5 Terabite Hard Disk!
Look at those curves! The better to deal with overheating as it gives extra surface area to cool off.
It's equipped to function with not only USB but also fire wire 400 and 800 drives.
And wit it's units combined, it becomes its own Voltron!
The 1.5 Terabites of space and a three year warranty are catchy, but costs (drum roll...) $259.99. It's pretty pricey and may not be able to take as much of a beating as the first hard drive.
Oh wait, here's a third challenger:
The Lacie Hard Disk, Design by Neil Poulton.
daayum!...1 Terabites of space for only $179.99
Not only does it have a USB port, but it also comes with 2 Firewire 400's!
The sleek black design looks cool but drop this black box and it will probably crack into a million useless terabites. It also only comes with a 2 year warranty.
Here are a couple more that I saw but didn't make it into my top three:
for all the gold diggers out there
The Lacie Golden Disk: A 1 TB USB drive for only $189
and for the lego fans:
The Lacie Brick Desktop Hard Drive
Stackable, multicolored hard drives:
It looks a little too simple and childish for my taste.
So what would you go for? I think i'm leaning towards the life preserver/raft #1 hard drive. It's only a two year warranty, but it's rugged and cheap. It's warranty may not last as long as the second harddrive with a 3 year warranty, but then again, it's built tough to whether a storm...or at least a trip in a backpack at least.
so yeah, I'll have to see. I may at the last minute even change to a different brand once I do a little more online research with C-Net and other sites. I know some of you may have issues with Lacie and there's others who say it's been good to them. In my personal experience, though, my first hard drive was a Lacie and it still is going strong after 4 hours. One thing is for certain though. I'm not buying a maxtor hard drive. I think it was a one year warranty and is now screeching like it's about to die any minute now.
